Although some critics and genre fans alike slammed the RZA’s directorial debut The Man with the Iron Fists a sequel is due out December 2014. Kungfukingdom.com reports that Roele Reine ( Death Race 2) will direct while the RZA returns as The Blacksmith. While many fans were disappointed in the RZA’s directorial debut, I was not. Let me tell you why.
First, as a inner city kid that grew up watching Shaw Brothers, Ocean Shores, and any and every kung fu movie I could the RZA will forever be my hero because he pursued his dream of co-writing and directing his homage to the old school kung fu classics with his ideas and vision. I agree it is not the masterpiece that many hoped for but it was still decent and better than some of the trash people rave over. Secondly, Hollywood needs more black and minority writers and directors who think outside the box. Much of the RZA’s ideas seemed to be based on a combination of Kid With The Golden Arms as well as experiences growing up in an urban environment yet he set his movie in a fictional multicultural China instead of “The Hood” and re-hashing tired old stereotypes of the perceived misfortunes of Urban Life. To me The RZA proved that he has imagination something that is lacking in many Hollywood productions and especially the ones about blacks and other minorities. I am looking forward to The Man with the Iron Fists: Sting of the Scorpion and will definitely own it when it is released.
